A couple of hours before Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri was set to debut her Fall/Winter 2024 collection in Paris, invited press in Singapore were treated to a screening of The New Look at National Gallery Singapore. While the biographical drama series is predominantly about Christian Dior navigating through war-torn Paris, and bringing back life and hope through fashion with his creations, it was also about his beloved sister, Catherine, a heroic member of the French Resistance. Catherine Dior, also affectionately known as Miss Dior, was more than a inspiration for the namesake perfume; she was a vision of courage, independence, and strength.

While the fall/winter 2024 collection was not explicitly about Catherine, it referenced the start of a new era at Dior in the late 1960s when the Miss Dior line was introduced; an era of ease and transition that was paramount to the House.

A blown-up handwritten “Miss Dior” print is a mainstay of this collection, a momento from the Christian Dior archives. In this look, it is plastered over a pleated skort with a matching blazer, anchored by a black turtleneck and a pair of slightly slouchy knee-high boots. Comfort and sophistication were well-balanced, and that was the message across every look.

Topped with a studded leather beret, something that is so iconic of a stereotypical French girl, this looks calls out to a more youthful crowd. A detail that drew me in was the toggle drawstring on her mini skirt, and the pocket in the middle; a nod to modern times while celebrating a bygone era.

A sense of nonchalance and confidence can be sensed through this outfit. A knit vest worn over a unbuttoned white shirt, styled with roomy trousers and loafers. Simple yet aspirational; the attitude and styling, equally.

Similar to look 22 with its toggle drawstring mini skirt, this time with a oversized bomber jacket with a matching print in monochrome. Worn with patent leather ankle boots, this look portrays a sportier side of Miss Dior, yet still with an innate sense of elegance.

Glamour for the youth is grounded in comfort, yet not forgoing the glitz—as the Dior fall/winter 2024 collection demonstrates towards the end. A loose-fitted beaded top, worn over a fringed knee-length skirt—all see-through in a tasteful sense—are paired with low-heeled Mary Jane pumps. Once again, the ease of movement is key; the freedom of movement, whether to walk, run or dance. Playful and versatile accessories such as gold multi-rings, ear studs, and pendant necklaces added to the opulence, and just the right amount.
